For his soon to be released eighth album for ECM Records,
The Other Side, Gustavsen returns to the piano trio setting, expanding its repertoire with new compositions as well as arrangements of J.S. Bach chorales and traditional Scandinavian hymns. Joining him are bassist Sigurd Hole and his long-standing collaborator, drummer Jarle Vespestad. The elements of Gustavsen's work remain intact -- a paradoxical blend of simplicity, quietude, and sensuality built on the hymns of his youth, a Nordic kind of blues, and an instinct for composition. With the passage of a decade of creativity, he has come full circle to the piano trio but with a new perspective that, as ever, moves his music forward.
PRESS QUOTES
"Quiet is the new loud. Tord Gustavsen chooses subtleness and beauty over contrast and bombast, and creates an utterly unique sound in the process."
STUART NICHOLSON, JAZZTIMES MAGAZINE (USA)
"Tord Gustavsen is one of the most intricate voices in jazz to emerge in many years ..."
RICHARD LEHNERT, STEREOPHILE (USA)
"... it stated the obvious to those of us who believe the group to be jazz's next classic trio: they're not looking back; they're moving forward. It was a point that was made time and again as the evening's music unfolded."
BILL SMITH, JAZZ REVIEW (USA)
"To Gustavsen, each note seems to hold sacred power."
ED ENRIGHT, DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE (USA)
"It took two encores to persuade the audience to leave and when they did so, there's every chance that, like your reviewer, they had Gustavsen's final melody -- or any one of its dozen or so predecessors -- playing on the internal jukebox."
ROB ADAMS, THE HERALD (UK)
