FABIANA COZZA SINGER
BRAZIL

Vocalist Fabiana Cozza has been described as a Brazilian Dianne Reeves, an apt comparison as both are rich, full-bodied contraltos of immense warmth, power, and clarity across a wide range. Others have likened her to the legendary Clara Nunes and Maria Bethânia, noting that when she sings in her lower register, she can reach the depth of a female tenor. The underlying impulse driving her music is samba -- the Afro-Brazilian social, cultural, and musical phenomenon. Fabiana goes beyond the samba that travels the world and parades each Carnival. She brings forth the ancient samba, an echo from the terreiros, the religious spaces where the old Afro traditions flourished, the colors of Bahia, the rhythms from the samba circles of Rio de Janeiro, the samba that fathered bossa nova. From them she fashions evocative performances of "shamanistic power" which honor the gift of Afro-Brazilian music given to her by her father, a singer who led one of Brazil's great, traditional samba schools.
